Modernization

Choose the first modernization slice by risk, not by screen count

A bounded modernization project should prove data mapping, rule recovery, validation, and cutover—not merely reproduce UI.

The smallest screen is not always the safest first modernization project. A better first slice is operationally bounded, valuable enough to matter, and rich enough to test the migration approach.

Look for a flow with a recognizable beginning and end, a manageable set of integrations, and owners who can validate results. It should include real rules and exceptions so the team proves more than visual reconstruction.

Before building, extract the source schema, scheduled jobs, integrations, reports, permissions, and manual workarounds. Then distinguish behavior the business intentionally relies on from behavior created by the old system’s constraints.

Validation should compare counts, totals, relationships, statuses, and representative workflows. Cutover needs a named decision owner, communication plan, data freeze or sync strategy, and rollback condition.

Modernization is an implementation project, not a checkbox in the subscription. The project produces a controlled system that can keep evolving on the platform after launch.
